Bienvenus – Bienvenidos – Welcome!  Bonne Annee 2012!

The foreign language classes at Spring Hill High School include all levels of French and Spanish.  I teach the French classes as well as Spanish I.  Although any efforts to learn a new language need to be about listening, speaking, reading and writing, we also try to learn as much as we can about the culture of French and Spanish-speaking countries.  For instance, last quarter in the French classes we celebrated the Mardi Gras holiday with the in-class cooking of crepes.  This is an annual event, one the French students always look forward to. We often check out current events in magazines and news from around the world, too.

Luckily, every year, Spring Hill High School welcomes several foreign exchange students, mainly from Europe and Latin America, but also from several Asian countries.  Our students are very open to making the acquaintance of these teenagers, hearing their stories and comparing cultures and customs.  They have very often formed strong friendships and have visited them in their homes in their native countries. I believe the presence of these exchange students has become one of the strongest links our students have to the larger world outside Spring Hill, Kansas.

As the world continues to seem smaller because we are able to communicate instantly anywhere in the world, we foreign language teachers realize the importance of having all students learn to speak another language.  In the business world of the future, there is no doubt that the people with the advantage of knowing and speaking a foreign language will have more opportunities.  So this reality influences our goals in our language classes, and we keep an eye on what our students will need in order to be successful in the 21st Century.
