Welcome to the Board of Education
By Bart Goering, Ph.D.,
Superintendent
From
the founding of small country schools and eventually a two-story framed
building in 1880, the Spring Hill School District has grown to more than
3,000 students attending six schools. While many changes occurred during
the district’s history, one important moment to note is the school
unification process that occurred in 1964, which created Unified School
District #230 to serve students grades kindergarten through 12.
Encompassing 71 square miles, the district now provides educational
opportunities to students in Spring Hill, Olathe and Overland Park plus
unincorporated areas of Johnson and Miami Counties.
To guide the school district, seven unpaid local citizens are elected to
the Spring Hill Board of Education by patrons within district
boundaries. Split into three areas, the board is made up of two
representatives from each area plus one at-large member.
Board of education members help set policy to guide the district’s
operations as well as oversee the hiring of administration and faculty.
Board members receive training through the Kansas Association of School
Boards to become educated about key issues, policies and legislation
involving education. Board members and administrators are also
encouraged to be active in educational groups at the state and national
level. This ensures that education’s best practices and ideas are
leveraged in the district. As a community member, you are encouraged to
participate in the governing process by attending board of education
meetings.
Board Meetings Now Held at Hilltop Education Center

The former Hilltop Elementary School has found renewed use following
a partial renovation. Now known as the Hilltop Education Center, its
primary tenant is the Spring Hill School District's virtual high school
-- Insight School of Kansas. Insight's headquarters are in one wing of
the building. The former gymnasium/cafeteria have also been renovated to
be a multi-use meeting space. In addition, most Board of Education
meetings are now held at the Center.
