District Saves $34,000 Through
Energy Reduction Program
|
By participating in Kansas City Power & Light’s (KCPL) MPower
Program, the Spring Hill School District earned $34,483 toward its
electricity costs. The innovative program pays participants for
simply agreeing to reduce electric consumption as requested.
The program, which is geared toward keeping electricity costs lower
during periods of high demand and reducing environmental impacts,
pays organizations annually to participate. Additional payments are
made each time an organization is asked to curtail its energy usage
and successfully does so.
A year ago, the Spring Hill School District signed a five-year
agreement with KCPL to reduce power by 50 percent when requested by
the company. The curtailment season is June through September, with
a maximum number of 10 curtailment requests not to exceed 8 hours in
length. During that time period in 2009, the district was asked to
reduce its electric usage on two dates and successfully achieved
this goal. For each curtailment, the district earned $1,244.25.
Combined with the annual guarantee of $31,995, the district received
a total of $34,483 credit, which is applied toward its electric
costs.
“I am delighted with the results, saving more than $30,000 is a huge
help to the district given the current reductions in funding for
public education,” said Doug Schwinn, USD 230’s director of
business. “Ultimately, the district could earn up to $51,000
annually dependent on the number of requested curtailments.”
To help offset budget challenges, administrators and staff continue
to look for innovative ways to cut costs or increase revenue that do
not adversely affect educational opportunities for students.
