Physical Science

8TH GRADE Required Class

Description of Course:   This class is a study of matter, energy, and their relationship.  It is essentially a basic chemistry and physics class.  Students will spend time working on laboratory activities to apply principles studied, improve  laboratory techniques, and learn more about the world around them.  Being able to apply what is learned to everyday life is prime objective of this class.  The major areas of study will include:  learning to use different types of measurements, force, work, moving objects, classification of matter, the Periodic Table, patterns within the different elements, chemical reactions, waves, light and sound, heat energy, and electricity.

Computer Science Class

8TH GRADE Elective Class

Description of Course:   In this class we will learn to use various software programs and proper care and use of computer hardware.  Students will review keyboarding skills learned in previous grades and work on improving their skills.

We will learn features of different programs involving word processing, spreadsheets, graphic packages, and presentation and communication programs.  Proper etiquette and use of computers will be stressed.  Use of printers, scanners, CD’s, projectors, and digital cameras will be covered.

Students will be expected to use these skills on assignments in other classes.  Students will also be expected to demonstrate some of their skills by writing letters to relatives using word processing and graphic programs.  Application of computer skills for home, school, and community are the main emphasize.

Homework:  Students should have time to complete assignments in class.  If they are absent or get behind, they may work on assignments before or after school or during homeroom time.
