American History
8TH
GRADE Required Class
Course Objectives:
This is
a survey course that will move through the early part of
American History from Columbus through the reconstruction of
the South. Projects
throughout the course, will allow students to further
investigate areas of personal interest.
Students will leave the class by the end of the
school year with a strong understanding of the basic
principles of American history and its importance in the
world through analysis of primary and secondary sources.
Classroom Rules and Expectations:
I will
follow very closely the school rules that are set out in the
student handbook. These
include items such as food and drink inside the classroom,
unfortunately there shall be none, backpacks should be of
the mesh variety, and absolutely no cell phones. I expect all students to come to class prepared with the
required materials necessary for instruction. For instance, always bring your textbook unless otherwise
told and always bring assignments, pens/pencils, books, and
anything else you need, as allowing students to go back to
their locker to get these items will count as a tardy, refer
to tardy policy. The
best tool to have in my classroom is a positive, motivated
attitude towards understanding the complexities of American
History. I want
students to be active in the many discussions we will have,
and to take a stand on their beliefs.
The following is a list of expectations all students
will comply with while in my classroom:
1.Come
to class prepared
2.Be
on Time
3.Participate
4.RESPECT
Tardy Policy:
I am
not very lenient when it comes to being tardy.
Students are allowed two free, no out of pocket cost,
tardies for the unexpected things in life we just can’t
control. If you
are out of you seat when the bell rings you are tardy.
If you come into class before the bell rings and ask
me if you can go to the restroom or you locker and you are
late, then you are tardy.
Starting with the third tardy and every tardy after
you will serve a 10th hour.
Instruction:
I will
attempt to use several different teaching styles to instruct
the material. However,
learn to listen and take good notes because I primarily use
the lecture/discussion techniques.
I use the standard grading scale.
Late work policy:
Late
work goes as follows. One
day late is 30 percent of and ten percent every day after up
to a week. After a week you will receive a zero for that assignment.
So it behooves you to turn in your work on time.
If there are mitigating circumstances to late work
students must communicate them to me immediately.
Good Luck to everyone and let’s have a good year!!!!!
